Joseph C. Berger, Jr.
Joseph was born August 15, 1947 in Scranton, Pennsylvania to Joseph C., Sr. and Evelyn Diamond Berger. While serving in the Army as Selective Operation NCO in Viet Nam, he met Sandy Lane who was then Special Services Recreation Director. They married September 18, 1971. After serving 3 ½ years in Europe, they moved to New Hampshire where Joe was also an ROTC Instructor. The Bergers returned to Germany to the NATO Base stationed with the British. Joe also became an Executive Chef at this time and was honored by the British in European culinary competition.
The Bergers were then stationed in Lawton, Oklahoma where Joe spent his free time raising and training Quarter Horses. Joe went overseas once more to serve in Korea as Executive Chef of the General’s Mess and then retired from the military in 1989.
Settling in Greenville after retirement, Joe opened La Chateau restaurant in the Greenville Uptown Forum and built Jacob’s Plain Gun Club and Centennial Security Services and Security Guard Academy.
Joe was also Director of Hunt County Youth Outdoor Days, Post Master Masonic Lodge, Past President of United Way of Greenville, Past President of the Greenville Downtown Business Association, Lifetime Member of the NRA, member of the Americal Legion and VFW, member of Ducks Unlimited, volunteer with 4H of Hunt County, and a 2nd degree black belt in Shotokan and Aikido. He was also a published author.
Joseph C. Berger, Jr., 62, of Greenville passed away May 25, 2010 at his residence.
His survivors include his wife of thirty-eight years, Sandy Berger of Greenville; daughter Marnie Phillips of California; grandchild Carley Phillips; an brother Jon Berger of Navasota.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
